The Simple Things/Simple Stories

Standard

So! A few weeks back Ashleigh issued a challenge to return to the simple stories and in the meantime we even now have a support group on facebook and it’s been great reading everyone’s stories and meeting some people!

I have been meaning to write a “simple stories” post for a while now and am finally getting around to it. A couple of weeks back I had one of those weeks, you know the ones, we all have them. When everything seems to go wrong even things that you thought couldn’t go wrong.  Something I realized in the middle of that week though is that there are always little, simple things to be thankful for even on a bad day!

So during that week when things seemed really blue I found myself appreciating the little, special things more than usual. Perhaps this is something I was missing out on all along! Something that I will try to remember to do all the time in the future:)

One day that week I went down to Brown’s Bay with my Mom and we spent an hour in a crafters’ heaven; a shop called Ike’s Emporium. They have every kind of trim and ribbon you could possibly want!  I came away with a back of trims and ribbons and calicos to make pretty cushion covers and somehow that just made my day better!

ImageSo much potential in a bag!

On that same day Mom and I went to one of my favourite shops and I found the cutest pyjamas ever and that made me smile! When we met my hubby used to call me the cupcake queen because I was alwayImages baking cupcakes so these just seem to fit somehow.

Then another day I walked into one of my favourite thrift stores and found some fantastic old books in the Fill A Bag For $1 bin.

There’s just something about a good book that makes a bad day better! Perhaps that is only true for bookworms like me?

There are so many little things to enjoy and I think sometimes we forget to take time for the simple joys in life!

For cute upholstery fabric I picked up at a thrift store to recover some old chairs: Image

Of snuggle warm chenille sweaters to wear on icy cold days like today! Image

And perhaps most exciting of all, a box of fluffy yarn just waiting to be turned into a cozy blanket to keep us warm this winter!

And now I must go and make dinner for my Love and I. Tonight I am going to take joy in spending time with the love of my life!

I challenge you all to take joy in the simple things!

Giving Your Lounge a New Look In Three Hours

Standard

I have been wanting to change our lounge for a while. We have an open plan living area so there really isn’t a huge amount that I am able to change except for throw cushions. For a long time the colour scheme (or rather the lack of) has been bothering me. I have been making all these cute calico cushion covers to sell and I decided that it was time I made some for us.

I only had a three hour window on Friday to do any sewing and so I set myself a challenge to redo all our lounge cushions and I can’t actually believe it but I did it!

So the cushions we had looked something like this:

ImageI have been wanting to change our colour scheme to green, brown and cream for a while so here we go.

Mothers’ Day Gifts

Standard

Let’s face it, gifts for the moms can get a little repetitive sometimes. It seems so easy to go the pretty soap route and things in that realm. This year I decided to do something totally different (for me anyway) and so I made my mom and my mom-in-law (Mom No. 2 :)) heating packs.

Here they are:

When I showed them to my hubby he was like, ” You totally got their styles perfect with the fabrics you picked.”  These heating packs are fantastic wrapped around a sore neck!

Heart Shaped Cushions

Standard

I have this thing with heart shaped cushions! I think they are adorable!  Awhile back I bought these two really tacky looking heart cushions at an opshop. They were brand new but they looked like this

only the one was hot pink. Rather tacky right? They have been waiting for a few months for a make over! So the other day I got brave and ripped off the hot pink one’s cover and I recovered it with an super soft old sweater I found at a thrift store. I have never done this before and ran into a few problems which Mom fixed for me when she was here yesterday! What is it about Mom’s that they always know how to fix things?

Here is the new and improved heart cushion:

Isn’t it cute?

And here is another experiment that I tried a couple of weeks ago (again Mom saved this one from an unfinished and uncertain fate!) and it is a patchwork heart cushion.  It’s the first time I’ve hand stuffed a cushion and trust me, it’s not as easy as it looks!!!

As you can probably tell I am in the cushion phase right now! I am feeling an owl phase coming on though so watch this space!

Calico Cushion Covers

Standard

Here is my new passion; calico cushion covers. As a child I HATED calico, and now, I love it! Who knew things could change so much in just a matter of years! I had this idea for making plain, simple, homey, cushion covers with calico a while back and yesterday I finally got around to it. I went down to the Emporium and bought a meter of calico and some pretty trims and ribbon, came home, and a couple of hours later (between doing washing and making dinner) these two babies were born! Here are some pictures..let me know what you all think?

It’s so easy yet so yummy! There’s really nothing to it! Chop some of your favourite veges, some vege chicken, a can of pineapple pieces juice and all, some fresh herbs, lemon juice to taste and fry it all in your wok. O and don’t forget the raw udon noodle! Fry those yummy noodles along with your veges for a yummy dinner!
